As is the case with many things, the first appearance of your house makes a lasting impression on those faced with the task of judging it.  When it comes to your home’s appearance, the judges are the people who will either be willing or unwilling to give you the money you are asking for to have it as their own.  

     Because of this, most real estate agents will tell you that you shouldn’t ignore the work involved in creating what’s called “Curb Appeal.” We have some suggestions on how to make your home look wonderful and welcoming the moment prospective buyers drive up. 


Pay attention to landscaping


  1. Cut back trees and shrubs. Overgrown foliage hides your home instead of accenting it.

  2. Keep your lawn manicured with regular mowing, trimming and edging.

  3. To inexpensively create a welcoming and fresh look, add flowering plants around your home. Don’t forget to put down new mulch in the flower beds when you are done planting.


Make it look clean


  1. Pick up any garbage that may be in or around your yard. Pick up fallen branches and put away toys, bikes, or any other items that might be considered clutter by someone outside of your household.

  2. Pressure wash your sidewalks, driveway, walls, windows and gutters.

  3. Clean out gutters and clear away any debris that might be on your roof.

  4. Stage your outdoor areas by removing any unnecessary yard ornaments and setting out clean and simple furniture.

  5. Put a fresh coat of paint on the exterior of your house, and re-stain any weather-worn decks.


 Don’t forget details


  1. Pay attention to the real estate sign in front of your house. Make sure it looks professional, clean, and cared for.

  2. Add the address to your mailbox. It is an inexpensive fix that almost everyone notices right away. If your mailbox is on a wooden post, be sure to freshly stain or paint it. If the mailbox is in shabby condition, it is wise to replace it.

  3. A newly painted front door with a shiny knocker and peephole is a great way to welcome house hunters into your home.
